What fun it was to be involved in the Allendale Theatre Company’s very first production "Round the Horne"at the weekend . I had known nothing about “Round the Horne” before this, but have now been introduced to the brilliant wordplay and hilarious characters invented in this radio show that was broadcast from 1965 - 1968. The show this weekend was read by actors in the way that it would have been when recorded. Justin Ellery, Alan Colclough, Gordon Wray, Bev Beck and Tony Lee did a brilliant job and many of the audience said they imitated the original voices so well that it was just like listening to the actual show (some of the actors had to do several different voices, even in the same paragraph). There was a live band in the original and the daunting task that Brian, Bob and I were given was to sound like the original. The sound effects were also live and included bells, gongs, a life sized door that opened and shut and the brilliant kissing noises created by Pam Mizen in her hilarious non-speaking role! I can't wait for the next production which is in May 2027 and will be an adaptation of the popular TV sitcom " The Good Life" Here is one of the songs sung by the cast - a very pacy version of Noel Coward’s “ There are Bad Times Just Around the Corner” and for those who like to sing along…here are the lyrics :0)VERSE They’re out of sorts in Sunderland and terribly cross in KentThey’re dull in Hull and the Isle of Mull is seething with discontent. They’re nervous in Northumberland and Devon is down the drain. They’re filled with wrath in the Firth of Forth and sullen on Salisbury plainIn Dublin they’re depressed lads, maybe because they’re Celts. For Drake is going west lads, and so is everyone else.Hooray Hooray HoorayMisery’s here to stay CHORUSThere are bad times just around the cornerThe Horizon’s gloomy as can be.There are blackbirds over the greyish cliffs of DoverAnd the rats are preparing to leave the B B CWe’re an unhappy breed and very bored indeed When reminded of something that Nelson said And while the press and the politicians nag, nag, nag We’ll wait until we drop down dead. VERSE From Colwyn Bay to Kettering they’re sobbing themselves to sleepThe shrieks and wails in the Yorkshire dales have even depressed the sheep. In rather vulgar lettering – a very disgruntled groupHave posted bills on the Cotswold hills to prove that we’re in the soup. While begging Kipling’s pardon, there’s one thing we know for sure.If England is a garden, we ought to have more manure.Hooray Hooray Hooray Suffering and Dismay CHORUSThere are bad times just around the cornerWe can all look forward to despairIt’s as clear as crystal, from Bridlington to BristolThat we can’t save democracy and we don’t much care.If the reds and the pinks believe that England stinks And that world revolution is bound to spread. We’d better all learn the lyrics of the old red flag And wait until we drop down dead(A likely story) (Land of hope and glory) Wait until we drop down dead ...
