The Live and Loud Competition

It was such a privilege to be at the Final of Wimborne Minster Folk Festival Live and Loud Competition as one of the Judges. 12 Acts in two categories of Under 16 and 17 plus.

What an incredible and varied array of talent:-

Tea Michington – A young singer songwriter and guitarist with a gorgeous gentle voice who sang an original song “Indigo” and then a cover “ I will leave the light on”. She paces her songs exquisitely and draws her audience in with lovely close-microphone vocals.

It’s a Girl Thing – Piano, vocal and ukulele duo, Kate and Sophie have a wonderful rapport together playing sensitively with a totally natural manner in front of the audience. They played two covers and were able to get a rhythm out of Ukulele and guitar in the song “ Adventures” by Holly Meyer that made you wonder where the drums were hidden! With a lovely soaring vocal, excellent piano accompaniment and occasional harmonies, this duo will go far.

Gracie Park – Here is a singer songwriter with great personality and attitude. With a voice reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and an expressive face, Gracie treated us to an original song where she had recorded the backing track herself and a cover “ With You” that showed off her amazing breath control. Gracie really engages with the audience in a fun way.

Anneli Williams – with Anna on Piano – Anneli Williams is a singer with a voice that has the combination of richness, versatility and tone that is hard to beat. Pair that with excellent piano accompaniment by Anna and you have a winning combination. Anneli’s personality is inherent in all that she does from her expressive face and performance to the variations in her voice. Anneli sang two covers Colourblind”, and “Always remember Me”.

Camilla B – Camilla B is a young singer songwriter with a voice that is impressive in its purity and gentleness but with an incredible power that she manages to bring out at just the right moments to totally engage the audience. Her original song, which she accompanied on guitar “Terms and Conditions” showed a maturity beyond her years and her cover of Arizona Sky which she accompanied on Piano was truly excellent.

The Winner of the Under 16 and under Live and Loud was Anneli Williams with Anna on Piano. The runner up was Camilla B. We are so excited to be having them back to perform at Wimborne Minster Folk Festival on Willow Walk.

We are also delighted to have discovered such fantastic artists as It’s a Girl Thing, Gracie Park and Tea Mitchington. We very much hope to be seeing them perform again in the not-to-distant future.

The Vixens – A four piece band featuring vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and drums performing with energy and confidence and producing an excellent sound. The band were musically very together and gave a great performance of original songs.

Caitlyn Grace – Caitlyn is not just a singer-songwriter but a whole package that exudes her bubbly personality on the stage. She appeared totally relaxed on stage singing her own original song “ Miss Confident” and also a terrific version of Uptown Funk. Her very distinctive voice is offset by excellent guitar playing.

Ethereal. – Ethereal is a mesmerising performer. The tunes are haunting and her voice is accompanied by skilled guitar playing . Her original song “ Ocean Song” is sweet and touching and she encourages the audience to sing along. Ethereal performs from the heart and is not afraid to take risks on stage, which leaves the audience wondering what is going to happen next.

Emma Hardy – Emma is a singer songwriter who is an expert in her field. She has a fantastic voice and accompanies herself with confident and expert guitar playing. Her voice is one minute soft and intimate and the next soaring to the rooftops. Whether singing her own compositions or covers, Emma Hardy owns the stage.

Sophie – Sophie is a young singer with a beautiful and versatile voice. She performs as if she was born on stage. Her choice of covers to sing is excellent and shows off her excellent vocal skills. Having not heard Sophie perform before I left the theatre wanting to hear more of her.

Becoming Branches – This trio of musicians was such a wonderful surprise. The Guitar and piano blend beautifully together as do the beautiful and gentle voices to provide a perfect performance. The Trio played two original songs, which were very different to each other but both superb.

At the end of the night the winner was announced as Becoming Branches, with Emma Hardy awarded the Runner Up prize. Both have agreed to perform at Wimborne Minster Folk Festival on Willow Walk and we will be delighted to welcome them back.

We offer our congratulations to ALL the finalists for giving us such a wonderful show and our sincere thanks to everyone who entered. There were bands not mentioned here who did not quite make it to the final but I am sure that you will be seeing them again in time.
